Flowers or Cows?, 2018

Red Mountains, 2018

100% Contained, 2015, Oil on Canvas, 20 x 16 inches, $210
While I was painting this, a forest fire started less than 10 km from my home. It was far enough away for my home to be safe, but there were other neighbourhoods dangerously close to it. This was the summer of 2015, when British Columbia was experiencing a record-setting dry spell and there were many fires burning throughout the province. Within a few weeks the fire was contained by the heroic efforts of fire fighters and tree fallers. Tragically, one of the fallers - a local man named John Phare - lost his life fighting this fire. It was devastating for the community and especially his family. During this time, the painting evolved from a pure abstract into a landscape with a fire burning on a hillside. It causes me to reflect on the bravery of those people who risk their lives for others. Proceeds from the sale of this painting will be donated to a local charity: the Gibsons Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.

Mountain Home, 2015, Oil and Pencil on Canvas , 12 x 16 inches, Sold
This painting evolved very gradually on a canvas covered board, which started out as a pallet for mixing paint and eventually inspired a picture of the mountains of the North Shore of Vancouver, where I grew up.

Where We Live, 2015, Oil on Canvas, 8 x 8 inches, Sold
I started this paintings with a series of pencil lines that spontaneously suggested the shape of a house. I spent much of the time on this painting editing it to move away from that connotation, but when all was done it ended up looking like a house - a different house than before, but still a house. Sometimes paintings have a mind of their own! I didn't even notice the two 'figures' that had appeared on the bottom right until someone commented to me on them after the painting was sold. I'm told the painting was purchased by someone who resides on the Sunshine Coast, "where we (she and I) both live".
